Hawarden golf ladies have successfully staved off challenges from six teams in 2025 to retain the prestigious Boyle Cup for the second year in a row.
The team was successful against Everglades, Akaroa, McLeans Island, Templeton, Lincoln and Harewood.
Prior to winning the trophy last year, the last time the Hawarden Club had its hands on the trophy was in 1933.
The Boyle Cup was presented to the Christchurch Ladies Golf Club in 1914 and is a Canterbury inter-club match challenge trophy. It is similar to the Ranfurly Shield of rugby. The holder has to host a minimum of six challenges at its home club per year. Clubs from all of Canterbury are invited to challenge. Six clubs are drawn by ballot to play the holder of the cup. Each team has five players who play individual matches. The Hawarden Club only has a small number of players to choose from to field a team, which was not always the same, due to illness, travel and other commitments.
‘‘We are incredibly proud to win this trophy with only a few ladies in our club,’’ a spokesperson says.
‘‘There was always a very devoted team of caddies who helped us through our challenges.
‘‘We enjoyed the camaraderie of our competitors and look forward to the challenges next year.’’
